When time and money are on the line, it’s easy for mistakes to plague the supply chain, especially when it comes to shipping freight. Although it is inevitable, and you’ll learn from those mistakes (it’s all part of gaining experience, right?) business is business, and preparing yourself with knowledge is key to avoid them the best you can. Here are some of the most common mistakes shippers make and how to avoid them.
Check and double-check weight.
One of the biggest shipping errors is not properly weighing cargo by either guessing or just asking the manufacturer and taking their word for it. If you’re shipping an LTL (less than truckload) load, there will be an official weigh in before departure, and if there is a difference from the weight estimate provided, this could result in extra fees from the freight carrier.
Classify correctly.
There are 18 classifications for standard freight, where base rates are applied. Sometimes it can be tricky to choose the correct classification, and the wrong choice can result in more fees. To avoid this, consult with your carrier to ensure freight is classified correctly.
Package like a pro.
Goods are at risk of damages simply because they were not carefully packaged to begin with. Take time to make sure you have the right sized boxes, there are no protruding objects and plenty of cushioning is used. When stacking boxes on a pallet, don’t allow overhang along the edges of the pallet, and be picky about placement to avoid any loose boxes or sliding.
Don’t get careless with the paperwork.
So you’ve made it through the packaging, you were meticulous and thorough...time is ticking and you’re at the final step- paperwork. This is where careless mistakes are easily made. Take your time with labelling, especially with the address. Too often a package will end up on the other end of the spectrum! Make sure labels are properly adhered to the box as well. Labels that peel off is a whole other headache you don’t want to deal with.
